Match report Dazzler Smashes into Malmesbury

After being on the receiving end of a couple drubbings this season Calne managed to turn the tables on Saturday with a comprehensive thrashing of (now) fellow relegation rivals Malmesbury.

This fixture was a must play, must win one for the Olive Tree sponsored club but heavy overnight rain at the wreck had caused the head curator a few nightmares. However with all hand to the pumps the pitch was got into a playable condition and all that was left to do was for Dan Knight to win an important toss.

With pretty much a full strength side Calne took to the field fully focused on making Malmesbury struggle for every single run. Returning to open the attack were Darren (The Dazzler) Holcombe and Stuart (Captain Cheerios) Whitty. Both pacemen were enjoying the best of the overcast conditions and Malmesbury struggled to get bat on ball, let alone hit anything off the square. Leading by aggression it was Whitty who got the breakthrough inducing a leading edge to remove the dangerous Toby Horton. The Dazzler was soon in on the act as well, mixing prodigious swing with two devastating yorkers to descimate the Malmesbury top order. Calne were on fire and the wickets column were in constant danger of overtaking the runs tally. Malmesbury were guilty of getting psyched out by the pitch, when in truth the wickets fell to injudicious shots, some excellent bowling from Holcombe and Whitty, and all backed up by some superb outfield catching, Tom Nott in particular holding on to two skiers at deep mid wicket. At 20 for 7 the league record books were in danger of being rewritten but as the sun started to peak through the visitor's lower order realised far too late that patience and sensible shot selection were all that was required to put runs on the board. Tom Pickering batted sensibly and, despite Stu Whitty's unique style of on field coaching advice, posted a valiant 18 not out.

Calne were struggling to finish off the Malmesbury tail and in an inspired change of bowling and field placement Chris Downham was brought on in place of Darren Holcombe and immediately posted Tom Nott out on the boundry. The bait was taken and young Tom made no mistake in bagging the two catches. There then followed a dissapointing aspect of the game when at 9 wickets down Malmesbury declared their innings on 69. A declaration in the spirit of the game is supposed to be a positive move to drive home a well earned advantage. Not in this case though as the declaration denied Calne the last bowling point plus the two bonus points for dismissing a side for less than 120. All within the rules but maybe something the league committee should look at for the future.

At the change over there were a few moans that the tea wasn't quite ready... Saying that though after that batting display a Drive Through McDonalds would have struggled accomodate their wishes!! Calne were happy though to take their momentum into the second phase of the game straight away and set about knocking the modest total off. Openers Jon Anstee de Mas and Cortney Earl immediately dug in and some solid batting saw Calne into tea with the job half done at 35 without loss. Normal service resumed after the break and Courtney Earl in particular batted superbly in leading Calne home in the 17th over. The 10 wicket win proved that the pitch wasn't that bad, the key was to get well forward and play through the V with the full face of the bat, a plan that Earl and Anstee de Mas implemented with due aplomb.

After the match skipper Dan Knight was understandably chuffed with is team's performance, and in particular Darren Holcombe; "Darren was an inspiration today. All week he had been telling me how focussed he was on today's game; in fact his concentration on the game was so hard that he absent mindedly drove into the back of someone earlier in the week writing his car off. That shows true commitment to the club"

Next week Calne travel to the bean counters of Nationwide CC. This is another must win game. They will be banking on another top performance and will hope to build upon this weeks success. If the hard work is invested then results will accrue.
