Wanborough 2 v CALNE CRICKET CLUB 3rd XI on Sat 07 May 2011 at 2pm
CALNE CRICKET CLUB Lost by 4 wickets

Match report Ok, week two and another toss lost by the skipper! As expected after last weeks slight lack of runs we were asked to bat. The pitch can best be described as 'interesting' with Jim Sutton being hit on the elbow and having a couple of balls fly past his head off a length. But as with all sports - 'it's the same for both teams'.

Again, we did not start too great, losing a wicket in the 2nd over with the score on 4. The innings was slowly re-built by Sutton and Ellis to try and get some statability but the scoring rate was low. A long stay at the crease by Ellis was brought to an end of the bowling of Brown (5-0-20-1). This brought Garland to the crease and with Sutton the scoring rate was starting to increase from the crawl at the beginning. Putting on 64 for the 3rd wicket, Garland departed of the bowling of Rahman (12-5-17-4) for 30. Sutton wasn't far behind after scoring a superb 69 after a flow of boundaries. With only 10 overs left and the openers back on, the tail certainly didn't wag! Wickets tumbled quickly as Calne were skittled for 125! The extra batting point being brought up by back to back run 3's from the young guns Bodman and Axford. Brown finished with brilliant figures of 10.3-3-29-5.

We knew that in order to make a game of it we needed to take wickets quickly to make an impact, and that's exactly what we did! Bodman and Axford were trusted with the opening spells and they certainly didn't disappoint. Bodman striking first after a superb diving catch at point by Jim 'I'm supposed to be taking it easy' Sutton. This was then soon followed by another wicket from Bodman (7.3-0-25-2). With the score on 3-2 we were very much in the game. Axford at the other end bowled well at the other end in his first adult Saturday league game ending with figures of 7-0-27-1. The innings was re-built by Wanbrough's number 4 Powers who controlled the strike. Powers stay of 45, took the game away from us. He was finally removed by old-timer Dave Matthews with a 'diving' (maybe falling) catch of his own bowling. A brief rally by Matthews (12-3-28-2) and Garland (12-1-43-1) got Wanborough to 6 down. But the the innings was well guided home by Haywood 21* and Smith 17* seeing Wanborough to their back-to-back victory against us to win by 4 wickets.

Well rallied lads, as per last week - there is always next week!
