First friendly against Goatacre
15 Apr 2019
Calne Cricket Club's first pre-season friendly took place at Beversbrook on Saturday 13th April.
After some exceptional winter nets, players were keen to take the field in the first pre-season friendly vs Goatacre CC.
On a well prepared Beversbrook wicket, renowned for providing an even contest between bat and ball, 1st XI captain, Sean Adams Cozier, won the toss and elected to bat first. Sean Adams and Sean Parker showed great promise at the top of the order, registering 64 runs in their first opening partnership. Adams in particular took the attack to the bowlers, scoring an aesthetically pleasing 41 from 46 deliveries - Calne's highest score of the match. Parker, on debut for the club, ran exceptionally well between the wickets until he was unfortunately dismissed LBW for 9. Next in to bat was Tom Clare, who was dismissed without troubling the scorers. In typical Calne fashion the middle order failed to deliver, with Jordan Butler, Aden Perry (also on debut) and Jerron John failing to make double figures. Some sensible yet positive middle/lower order batting brought Calne back into the match, with Spn Nawa and Jake Foster making 17 and 31 respectively. A combination of big hitting and good running from the lower order brought Calne's total to 166 from their 40 overs. Joe Clare on return for the club struck 20 from 16 balls, and was supported with solid defence and clever batting from James Sutton and Lucy Wood.
The atmosphere at tea was one of positivity and anticipation, an atmosphere that would be replicated on the field by opening bowlers Joe Clare and Jim Sutton. Both bowlers made use of the conditions, despite not picking up wickets the pair bowled a nagging line and length to build pressure on the Goatacre batsmen. James Sutton was particularly impressive with his 5 overs going for just 12 runs. Sean "No Ball" Parker would pick up the first wicket of the innings, and his first wicket for the club in the same strike - Sources say he will be using a tape measure to measure his run up come the first league match after bowling 7 no balls. Pick of Calne's bowlers was Jerron John, with impressive figures of 7.4 overs, 38 runs and picking up 4 wickets. Other notable performances came from Aden Perry with 6 overs, 28 runs and picking up his first 2 wickets for the club, and tidy figures of 5 overs, 11 runs and 1 wicket for Captain Sean Adams. Calne maintained their reputation as being one of the best sides in the field, dropping no chances that came their way and snaffling the half chances that were given. However some questionable umpiring when the Goatacre number 3 was struck in front off the bowling of Jordan Butler sealed Calne's fate. Calne were convinced the batsman was plumb LBW - the Goatacre umpire thought otherwise. Goatacre would chase the runs down with 2.2 overs remaining.
Calne took a lot of positives away from the match, which will be carried forward into the upcoming season.
A competitive game of cricket, played in the highest spirit.
