Match report Starting a week before the official first date of league cricket the 3rd team actually got the privelege to play on the new and brilliant wicket at Beversbrook. Unfortunately the season did not start the way we had hoped.

Having lost the toss (following on the routine from last season...watch out for my 'Gaiger esq' story in the Gazette and Herald) we were asked to bat. The tone of the day was unfortunately set by losing a wicket from the first ball of the game. We quickly found ourselves 8 for 2. The innings was looking to be rebuilt by Tom Clare who was looking in good form before chipping a ball to mid-wicket, departing for 17. Wickets contined to fall at regular intervals, with some good bowling performances from Harman (9-1-40-3), Hammond (8.1-4-20-4) and Smith (6-1-18-3). Looking likely to fail to pick up our first battng points of the season, Ben Wickens with some clean hitting continued to keep the scoreboard creeping closer to that mark. Aided by a cameo performance from Elliot Bodman batting at 11, they managed to tske our score to 106 before Ben Wickens was the last man out scoring a fluent 40. Bodman finished not out on 15.

We knew that this was going to be a difficult score to defend, and it relied on us taking early wickets if we were going to pick up our first win of the season. Despite tight bowling, which included a fantastic first spell from Wickens, whose first 8 overs were all maidens! We just couldn't get the breakthrough that we needed. Manrion's patient 47 the highlight of the Wanborough innings. Dave Matthews (6-1-13-1) picked up the first wicket getting Croche caught at deep mid-wicket by Morley for 11. Wickets were hard to come by as Manrion was ably supported by Powers (28*). A breif scare when a couple of quick wickets fell in Wickens second spell, which saw his final figures return 12-9-10-2. The winning runs were finally hit in the 36th over, which saw Wanborough home to a 6 wicket victory.

Next week sees the reverse of this fixture.
