The day dawned and it felt like it was going to be a good cricket day. Malmesbury decided to field first probably thinking that the pitch would be better to bat on later in the day. A determined and confident looking pairing of Rowan and Victoria opened the batting. Some excellent running between the wickets signalled a very positive approach to the innings and this was continued throughout. In particular the third wicket partnership between Rowan and Lauren P piled on the runs with Lauren scoring 19 and Rowan retiring on 31. The impetus was maintained by Liam, Sophie and Lily who hit the ball very hard with some excellent timing to reach a very quick and dominating 20 runs. Ultimately a very impressive total of 142 set our opponents a really good target. Overall this was a superb batting display and one which shows how well the team are progressing.
We took to the field with an expectation that a win was more than achievable and a wicket from Sophies opening delivery only served to heighten that expectation. A steady flow of wickets kept the run rate down which included some excellent catches from Daniel and Lauren A. Some very accurate bowling from Izzy, Charlie, Dillon, Lauren P & A and Liam in the middle of the innings ensured that Malmesbury were kept well behind the required run rate. Daniel finished his spell at the end of the innings taking 2 vital wickets in his last over. Our opponents fell well short of the required total which is testament to a very impressive bowling and fielding performance. A much deserved win for our wonderful girls and boys who have worked really hard this season despite the difficulties caused by Covid-19. I am supremely proud of our U13 team not only in the way they have played but how well they are gelling as a team and for their enthusiastic and supportive approach to all facets of the game we love so much. I would also like to say well done to Victoria and Rowan for their excellent leadership on the day. We look forward to our next match on Bank Holiday Monday and whatever the result I know we will have a great afternoon.
