Match report Calne and Avebury CC U15 T20 Match Report

On a typically cool and breezy early May evening Calne and Avebury CC welcomed our opponents in the first T20 game of the season. Purton were asked to bat first and it’s fair to say they had targeted 180 as being a good score for them. Understandable as they had several county players amongst their numbers. I’m not one for singling out players for their performances but what Purton hadn’t bargained for was our secret weapon and playing in his debut match for us, Jacob Rains took two wickets in his very first over and was unfortunate not too get another in the same over. What makes this even more commendable is that Jacob only started playing cricket towards the end of last season. Wickets were taken quite regularly during Purtons innings which restricted them to a final score of 122 for 7. Our bowling and fielding was truly excellent with all catching opportunities being taken coupled with some excellent ground fielding. Sticking with Calnes ethos of inclusion and participation we ensured that 9 of the team bowled at least 2 overs each. We started off our innings steadily and for the first 10 overs we were up with the run rate. Clearly rattled, Purton stuck with their main bowlers which meant that, unlike us, they only utilised 6 bowlers. Ultimately we didn’t reach our target but it was a valiant effort.
Overall there are lots of positives to take forward from the match for the rest of the season and our connection with Avebury will certainly prove to be very rewarding and beneficial for all and long may it continue.
